GARDINER — Police have arrested a 38-year-old man in connection with the shooting of his 34-year old girlfriend over the weekend.

Sean Kingston of Wiscasset is accused of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, according to Gardiner police Chief James Toman.

Toman said the victim likely will recover from her injuries. She was shot in the torso with a handgun.

The series of events leading to the arrest started shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday. Officers went to a Costello Road residence after a shooting was reported, the police chief said.

Upon arriving, police spoke with the victim and she was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Toman said. Kingston had left the scene by the time police arrived.

At 10:45 Monday morning, Kingston turned himself in for questioning, and after a police interview, he was placed under arrest by detectives, Toman said.

Additional charges are pending against Kingston, who is being held on $1,000 bail at the Kennebec County Jail. The incident remains under investigation.
