SOUTH PARIS — An 18-year-old who was shot by state trooper in June has pleaded not guilty to charges of burglary, theft and criminal threatening.

James Reynolds of West Paris appeared in the Oxford County Court on Friday and was released with a number of conditions, including not having contact with the owner of a seasonal camp he allegedly burglarized.

Police say Reynolds was approached by a trooper after the alleged break-in. Police say Reynolds pointed the gun at the trooper, who fired three shots, striking Reynolds in the head, arm and leg. A state attorney general’s office investigation determined that the trooper was justified in firing his weapon.

The Portland Press Herald reports that Reynold’s mother said he’s bipolar and schizophrenic.

Reynolds’ lawyer didn’t immediately return messages seeking comment.
