PORTLAND — Former Portland Sea Dogs player Billy McMillon has been named the club’s new manager, the Boston Red Sox announced in a news release Wednesday.

McMillon replaces Kevin Boles at Boston’s Double-A affiliate, and Boles has been promoted to manage Triple-A Pawtucket.

Sea Dogs hitting coach Rich Gedman, pitching coach Bob Kipper and athletic trainer Brandon Henry will all return to Portland.

McMillon, 42, will be the 11th manager in Sea Dogs franchise history. The 2014 season will be McMillon’s seventh season in the Red Sox organization and fifth as a minor league manager. He has a career managerial record of 299-257 (.538). He managed the High-A Salem Red Sox in 2012 and 2013, leading Salem to the 2013 Carolina League Championship.

In 2010 and 2011, McMillon managed the Low-A Greenville Drive and led them to the South Atlantic League Championship Series in his managerial debut in 2010. Prior to managing the Drive, he served two seasons as the Drive’s hitting coach from 2008-09.

McMillon spent parts of six seasons in the major leagues with the Florida Marlins (1996-97), Philadelphia Phillies (1997), Detroit Tigers (2000-01), and Oakland Athletics (2001-04), where he hit a career .248 in 269 games.

Rockies acquire Morales from Red Sox

DENVER — The Colorado Rockies have reacquired left-hander Franklin Morales from the Boston Red Sox for versatile infielder Jonathan Herrera.

It was the second trade the Rockies orchestrated on Wednesday. They also picked up outfielder Drew Stubbs from the Cleveland Indians for reliever Josh Outman.

Morales is coming off a season in which he went 2-2 with a 4.62 ERA in 20 games for the World Series champion Red Sox.

He was a member of the Rockies when they made their run to the World Series in 2007, only to be swept by Boston.

Colorado also picked up minor league reliever Chris Martin in the deal.

The 29-year-old Herrera hit .292 with one homer and 16 RBIs in 195 at-bats for Colorado this year. He played second base, third, shortstop and two games in left field.

This has been a busy offseason for the Rockies, who recently acquired lefty Brett Anderson from the Oakland Athletics.
