FALMOUTH — An early morning crash involving four tractor-trailers and a car temporarily shut down both southbound lanes at mile 55 in Falmouth, according to Maine State Police.

At about 3:50 a.m., state troopers arrived at the multi-vehicle accident, according to a statement from police. A tractor-trailer had jackknifed causing a chain reaction of crashes. Two other tractor-trailers rolled over, lost their cargo and caused major damage. A fourth tractor-trailer and passenger car were also involved.

All five motorists in the accident were taken to Maine Medical Center for treatment, police said.

The southbound lanes near the crash were shut down, and traffic was diverted off Exit 63 in Gray. As of 2:00 p.m., according to the Maine Turnpike Authority, the southbound lanes from Gray to Falmouth were reopened and the crash was cleared.

The freezing rain on Saturday morning has caused dangerous road conditions all across Maine.
