Tax workshop for woodlot owners

FARMINGTON — The Franklin County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Local Chapter Small Woodland Owners Association of Maine are bringing a free regional tax workshop to landowners from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, in the North Dinning Hall at the University of Maine at Farmington just off South Street.

Jim Norris, IRS forester for nearly 30 years, will present a workshop on federal income tax for woodland owners. His presentation will include types of forest ownership, cost and income considerations, establishing basis, determining loss or gain, and proper treatment of program payments.

Norris will present an example of an actual Maine property for the timber sale portion of the presentation. He will also hold “office” hours the following day for anyone with questions about how to report timber sale income as well as choices involved in the recognition of USDA-NRCS program payments. Contact at the workshop will establish meeting times the following day.
