1933 – 2014

AUBURN — Albert G. Smith, 81, of Lincoln Avenue in Rumford, passed away on his birthday, Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the Hospice House, following a long illness.

He was born in West Peru on Jan. 14, 1933, a son of Walter J. and Angie M. (Oldham) Smith Sr. Albert graduated from Stephens High School, Class of 1951. He then entered the U.S. Air Force, being stationed at various air bases in New York, Massachusetts, Florida, Texas, California, North Africa, Newfoundland, Vietnam, Thailand and Hawaii in the refueling field. He retired in 1973, after 20 years of service.

After his retirement from the service, he was employed with PH Chadbourne, Rafuse Oil Co. and the town of Rumford.

Albert loved his beloved dog, Buddy, and took pride in his home and his Chevy truck.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Barbara E. (Burgess) Smith, of Rumford; children, Timothy Smith and wife, Jodi, of Mexico, Anthony Smith and companion, Peggy Turner, of South Paris, Walter Smith and wife, Pamela, of North Carolina and Albert G. Smith Jr. of Rumford; stepchildren, Shirley Gallant and husband, Jamie, of Rumford, Erland “Buddy” Tidswell and wife, Elizabeth, of Rumford, Gloria Tidswell of Mexico, Brenda Cushman and husband, Greg, of Mexico and Michael Tidswell and wife, Donna, of Rumford; daughter-in-law, Gayle Tidswell of Mexico; two sisters, Ferne Arsenault and husband, Robert, of Rumford and Mary Mitchell and husband, Peter, of New Hampshire; 23 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents; a son, David Michael Smith; stepdaughter, Jackie Tidswell; stepson, Robert Tidswell; a brother, Walter Smith; and a granddaughter, Kristy Tidswell.
