LEWISTON — A proposed local charter school will get a public hearing next week in front of the Maine Charter School Commission.

The Lewiston-Auburn Academy Charter School’s public hearing will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Feb. 7 at Central Maine Community College in Auburn.

An in-person interview with the commission and applicant Tarlan Ahmadov will be held from noon to 3 p.m. the same day and also open to the public.

According to Ahmadov’s original letter of intent, the Lewiston-Auburn Academy Charter School would emphasize math and science, but balance that “with a strong foundation in the humanities.”

It would initially serve 120 students in grades six and seven.

Two other proposed schools, the Maine Connections Academy and the Maine Virtual Academy, will get hearings on different days.

On March 4, the commission will vote on whether any of three applications should move on to contract negotiations and ultimately open this fall.

The commission decided against giving a public hearing to the Many Hands Montessori School proposed for Windham.
