SUMNER — 2014 is the year of the horse in the Chinese calendar, which celebrates the new year on Friday, Jan. 31.

The Western Foothills Land Trust, which serves a 10-town area of Oxford County, including Sumner, promoted the Year of the Horse sleigh rides on its winter calendar in recognition of the role sleigh and carriage rides play in sustaining diverse rural economies and cultural traditions in Western Maine.

Becky and Butch Durgin and their Belgians, Bill and Ben, of Meadow Creek Farm, Sumner, are ready to offer sleigh rides to commemorate the year of the horse as soon as conditions allow, i.e. as soon as there is more snow.

Anyone interested in a sleigh ride, should call or email the Durgins to set up an appointment at 388-2044, or beckyd@megalink.net. Cost is $10 a person.
