AUGUSTA — Central Maine Power is urging customers to disregard calls from people claiming to represent the utility demanding payments.

Spokeswoman Gail Rice said affected customers are warned of disconnection and are instructed to purchase a prepaid debit card at a convenience store and call a number with the card information. In some cases, customers were notified a payment was not received and a new transaction would be required.

The utility is warning customers to verify all information before making payments, and utility customers are frequent targets for scammers.

The scammers have mainly targeted restaurants, markets and other small businesses, along with some residential customers.

CMP customers should be aware that they will not receive calls for a payment if his or her account is in good standing. Customers can check their balance at www.cmpco.com or call 800-750-4000.
