1937 – 2014

WEST PARIS — Ernest J. “Ernie” Clegg Jr., 76, of West Paris and formerly of Andover, Mass., passed away peacefully at Ledgeview Living Center on Thursday, Jan. 30.

Ernie was born in Andover, Mass., on June 7, 1937, the son of the late Alice Cameron (Nicholas) and Ernest Clegg Sr. Ernie was a graduate of Punchard High School in 1955. He worked at Tire Rubber Co. in Andover, Mass., for several years, before being employed as a chef at New England Memorial Hospital in Stoneham, Mass. He worked there for 30 years, before retiring to West Paris.

Ernie loved helping people and was involved in many community activities. For many years, he was a volunteer at Young’s Greenhouse in South Paris. A project he created and enjoyed while working there was delivering leftover plants to surrounding neighborhoods and giving them away to people.

He helped run a soup kitchen in Norway and also volunteered at the soup kitchen supported by the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Dixfield. As a longtime member of the church, he participated in all of its activities. Ernie was an avid gardener and was proud of the beautiful floral gardens, particularly the “hosta walk,” he created at his home in West Paris.

He is survived by his brother, James Clegg, of New Port Richey, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his sisters, Shirley Lombari and Joanne Irving; and his brother, Arthur Clegg.
