LIVERMORE FALLS — The south face of the town’s century-old tower clock atop the Bank Building has stopped working, Town Manager Kristal Flagg told selectmen Tuesday.

The four faces on the Seth Thomas clock operate separately, she said.

Three of the faces have glass on them and the one that is not working has Lexan, a transparent plastic that is very durable and strong, she said. The cold weather is believed to have caused the Lexan to bend in the frame and hit the clock hands, she said.

Gary Desjardins of Livermore goes up the tower to wind the clock regularly. He recently notified Flagg that the south face of the clock was not working, she said. He does an outstanding job of taking care of the clock, she said.

Tower clock repairman Jim Bryant of Wayne was notified, and parts have been ordered, she said.

The clock was installed in 1912 when the Bank Building, then known as the Sharaf building, at 38 Main St., was rebuilt after fire destroyed it in 1910, the late historian Dennis Stires said in 2007 when the clock was being restored.

D.S. Thompson, an optician, jeweler and community leader in Livermore Falls, donated the clock to the town, Stires said. The original cost was estimated to be $1,200.
