LEWISTON — A Sabattus man was arrested and charged with robbing two credit unions over the past week.

Brent Roaix, 30, was staying with his sister in an apartment at 142 Bartlett St. when he was arrested Tuesday evening.

He was charged with robbing the Rainbow Credit Union on Main Street just after 4 p.m. Tuesday. Detectives connected him to a Jan. 29 robbery at Community Credit Union on Pine Street and charged him in that robbery, as well.

Police believe Roaix acted alone, Lt. Michael McGonagle said.

In Tuesday’s robbery, Roaix demanded money from a teller and threatened to use a weapon but didn’t display one. He fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. Police recovered some of that cash at the time of his arrest at 5:44 p.m., McGonagle said.

No one was injured. No weapon was found.

Roaix also was charged on five unrelated outstanding warrants: two out of 8th District Court in Lewiston, two out of South Paris District Court for unpaid fines and fees and one on a drug possession charge.

He was being held Wednesday at Androscoggin County Jail in lieu of $100,000 cash bail.

McGonagle said the investigation was ongoing, and may result in more arrests.

Police brought a tracking dog to the scene, but Roaix developed as a suspect through “excellent investigative work by police officers and detectives” at the scene, McGonagle said.

He said police suspected Roaix might try again, “so we were ready for him.”

Surveillance video also helped identify Roaix in the investigation, McGonagle said.

An unidentified man also was arrested at the Bartlett Street apartment on drug charges, unrelated to the robberies, McGonagle said.
