FARMINGTON — Broken air brakes caused a tractor-trailer to snarl traffic on Routes 2 and 4 in Farmington on Tuesday morning.

As William West, 40, of Chesterville attempted to make a left turn out of Irving’s Big Stop about 8:40 a.m. with his tractor-trailer, the air brakes broke, Rosie said. A spring-levered air bag holding the trailer locked up.

West disconnected the trailer in the road, blocking traffic and the driver of another truck connected the trailer to his truck and backed the trailer into Irving’s, Rosie said.

Heather Barton, 32, of Farmington stopped her Ford Focus in the traffic west of the scene waiting to get through on her way into town.

Another driver, Arlene Newell 61, of Portland driving a Ford pickup with a plow clipped the Focus, sending it across the oncoming lanes and into a snowbank in front of Farmington Ford, he said.

Barton’s vehicle was damaged but she was able to drive it away. The pickup was not damaged.
