Valentine’s party and open house

LISBON FALLS — On Wednesday, Feb. 12, the Lisbon Historical Society will hold its annual Valentine’s Party and Open House. Members and guests will meet at 7 p.m. in the society’s meeting rooms at the MTM Center. Entrance and parking are at the rear of the building.

Antique Valentine cards will be on display, and members are invited to bring handmade Valentine cards to exchange. The Lisbon Historical Society Museum will be open, and attendees will also be welcome to browse the extensive collection of Lisbon-related items, including genealogy collections.

This is also the month for members to pay annual dues. Secretary/Treasurer Dorothy Smith can provide membership status and accept dues payments at the meeting.

Free baking workshop for families

LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing is offering a free baking workshop for families of all ages. “Baking with Love” will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, at the Dempsey Center, 29 Lowell St.

Participants in this family-centered workshop will be baking fortune cookies with a twist. Made from scratch and with love notes, these cookies will carry important messages from the heart. Families will also have the chance to create personalized oven mitts. Presented by Ellie Stevens and Tookie Bright, LCSW. Registration limited to 20.

CAN film festival is Feb. 14

WINTHROP — The CAN Film Festival will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, at Friends Meeting House, 219 Winthrop Center Road.

The festival is a monthly community event benefiting area food pantries. A family-friendly movie is shown in large-screen format and refreshments are provided.

Admission is nonperishable food (canned or boxed) as well as non-food essentials (like toothpaste, soap, shampoo, diapers). Monetary donations made out to specific pantries are also welcome.

CFF is an ecumenical partnership of Winthrop Center Friends Meeting (Quaker) and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church.

Beneficiaries include Winthrop Food Pantry, Mount Vernon Food Bank, St. Mark’s Everyday Essentials Pantry and the Center for Wisdom’s Women.

Sweetheart Bake Sale at Cumston Hall

MONMOUTH — The Sweetheart Bake Sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at Cumston Hall, in the reception room of the library.

Available will be cupcakes, whoopie pies, brownies, bars, cookies, fudge, sweetbreads, quiches and apple pies, carrot cake by-the-slice, Lorette’s prize-winning cornbread and Jarod’s “chili-to-take-on-the-ice.”

All proceeds support Monmouth Museum’s projects and programs.

Bean supper Feb. 15 at Amvets

NEW GLOUCESTER — A bean supper will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at Amvets Post 6.

Menu will include two kinds of beans, homemade biscuits, cole slaw, brown bread, hot dogs, American chop suey and homemade pies.

Cost is $7 for adults, $3 under 12, and under 6 free.

The supper is held the third Saturday of each month.

Dental Health Month poster contest for kids

AUBURN — Center Street Dental will be participating in National Children’s Dental Health Month in February by holding their third annual poster contest. The contest will run until Feb. 28 and the winners will be announced in March.

The theme is “Sharing Smiles.” All children K-6 of Androscoggin County are invited to participate. There will be three winners from each of the two categories, kindergarten through third grade and fourth through sixth grade.

The winners will receive scholarships for college $500, $250 and $150. Additionally, the art department of each winner’s school will receive a matching donation.

Cookbook Collectors Club to start Feb. 18

AUBURN — The Cookbook Collectors Club is a new monthly program for lovers of cooking and food. The first meeting will take place at noon Tuesday, Feb. 18, in the Conference Room on the ground floor of the Auburn Public Library, and all are encouraged to attend.

Bring a small sampling prepared from one of your favorite cookbooks and share what makes the cookbook good (or bad). Every month members of the club will gather to share recipes from some of their favorite cookbooks and rate the recipes within them.
