WILTON — The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday voted 3-2 to have the Road Committee look at the Tilton Road and review the list of roads considered for discontinuance in 2006.

The action followed discussion on discontinuing roads that have more or less become long driveways. At its previous meeting, the board discussed nine roads considered for discontinuance in 2006 but decided to review materials and continue the discussion.

Some selectmen thought there were more important issues to consider before the June town meeting.

There’s only time to research and consider one road, Town Manager Rhonda Irish suggested.

Selectmen Paul Berkey, Tom Saviello and Tiffany Mauiri voted in favor of focusing on Tilton Road, while Selectmen Terry Brann and D. Scott Taylor voted against.

“There’s a barn next to the road that is collapsing,” Brann said. “The plow is hitting the rubble.”

Brann thought the road was not passable because there are materials on it. It’s hazardous and the town could save money by discontinuing it, he said.

The grave of a Civil War veteran is in a cemetery beside the road, Selectman Paul Berkey said, suggesting the board close the road to winter maintenance. No one probably needs to go to the cemetery in the winter, he said.

Nothing was done when a similar discussion about the roads was held in 2006, Brann previously told the board.

Some residents of roads on the list attended Tuesday’s meeting. The Sanford Road was not closed by a vote of 5-0 in 2006, one resident said, indicating more than one resident lives on the road.

Another reminded the board that residents in their 90s were living on the Melcher Road and probably paid taxes to the town for 70 years.

Saviello suggested having the Road Committee look at the problem and make a recommendation.
