WISCASSET — A 31-year-old Wiscasset man remains in Two Bridges Regional Jail on Friday morning after what police describe as a standoff on Hodge Street late Thursday night.

Richard Sanford is charged with domestic violence assault, domestic violence criminal threatening, obstructing report of a crime or injury and creating a police standoff, according to a release from Wiscasset Police Chief Troy Cline.

Wiscasset police and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded at 11:15 p.m. Thursday to the man’s home, where his 29-year-old wife reported that Sanford threatened to kill her and that she thought she heard him loading weapons while she was calling for help. She told police that Sanford had “numerous firearms” in the home.

The woman left the home with the couple’s 3-year-old son, and Richard Sanford allegedly closed the door and refused to come out when asked to do so by deputies.

After more officers from the sheriff’s office arrived at the scene and set up a perimeter around the house, Sanford twice began to come out of the house but then went back inside, according to the release.

Officers attempted to reach Sanford using a public address system, and then made contact by cell phone. Cline negotiated with Sanford and he voluntarily left the building and surrendered to deputies without further incident, according to Cline.

The Maine State Police Tactical Team was requested. It is unclear if the team arrived at the scene before the incident ended.

The female victim was treated and released from Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick for what Cline described as minor injuries. The child was not injured.

Sanford remains at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset on $1,000 cash bail and is scheduled for arraignment on Friday.
