1917 – 2014

SOUTH PARIS — Donald C. Keene, 96, of Buckfield, died Friday, Feb. 7, at Market Square Health Care Center.

He was born in Sumner on Aug. 17, 1917, the son of Grover Cleveland and Leola Mildred Turner Keene. He faithfully served in the U.S. Army during World War II; he was wounded in Okinawa and was a Purple Heart recipient. He married Laura Verrill on Aug. 2, 1949, and they enjoyed 65 years together. He worked at a dowel mill for many years.

Donald was a member of the American Legion in Buckfield, the VFW and the DAV. He enjoyed tinkering outdoors, trading vehicles and Ford tractors, playing with firewood and shooting squirrels. He also held the Boston Cane for the town of Buckfield. Donald loved his family and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Laura, of Buckfield; three children, Donna Coburn, Grover Keene and wife, Wanda, and Loretta Millett; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Agnes Bennett; and two sons-in-law, Dana Coburn and Dean Millett.
