100 years ago, 1914
With her bunkers filled with coal and a plentiful supply of provisions on board, the revenue cutter Androscoggin steamed out of Portland harbor today for the west coast of Newfoundland to rescue the United States Naval tug Potomac, which was caught in drift ice in the gulf of St. Lawrence while attempting to relieve fishing schooners in distress near the Bay of Islands. The Androscoggin left the harbor shortly after 10 A. M. and is proceeding at full speed on the trip of nearly 1,000 miles.

50 years ago, 1964
Two Lewiston-Auburn men, traveling with their wives enroute to a vacation in California, found themselves teamed with two of the country’s more glamorous ladies at the Desert Inn golf course at Las Vegas earlier this week. James S. Miller, former owner of Twin City Tire Company, Auburn, Samuel Isaacson of Lewiston, and their wives, found the course heavily populated, and in order to clear the tee-off area faster, the golf pro began setting up foursomes and the local golfers found themselves partners of Mrs. Barry Goldwater and Mrs. Harry James, who is film star Betty Grable.

25 years ago, 1989
State and local officials on Friday hailed the opening of the Lewiston Alternative Vocational Center as a one-of-a-kind facility that will be a key factor in correcting the area’s high dropout rate. “This type of education is, no doubt, a wave of the future,” Lewiston Superintendent Robert Connors told several dozen people at an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Cottage Road facility.
