LEWISTON — Councilors will host a listening session Tuesday to discuss converting the former Pettingill School into a neighborhood park.
Neighbors, former students and parents formed the Friends of Pettingill last year to create a community park on the two-acre parcel at College and Little streets. The group has raised roughly $4,000.
The discussion is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in City Hall.
Lewiston officially closed Pettingill Elementary School in 2008, moving the students to Geiger Elementary. School Committee members recommended tearing the building down and building a neighborhood park on the lot.
Neighbors have been using the former school’s playground as a community park ever since the school closed.
Developing a park could cost an estimated $55,000 for fencing, landscaping and site work, according to the city. The city has just completed demolition of the school.
The city has also considered subdividing the land and selling lots for up to six single-family homes.
