WILTON — Franklin County Adult & Community Education spring brochure is offering two art courses with art instructor Barbara Hathaway, “Painter of Sunsets.”

Art of Watercolor starts Monday, Feb. 24, and Acrylics starts Wednesday, Feb. 26. Both classes are at the Hathaway Art Studio, 32 Maple St., Wilton. Each class is held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for five weeks. Students bring their own supplies.

Art of Watercolor starts with basic composition and control mixing colors. Vibrant colors can be mixed for wonderful sunsets and water reflections. Demonstrations on brush strokes, textures, washes, glazes and repainting mistakes will be covered.

Materials needed include: water color paper 140 weight tablet form; watercolor paint set; three brushes, one large, one medium and one small; palette; jar for water and paper towels. Watercolor can be used for making greeting card, too. Students can bring their own photos to work from.

Acrylic paint dries quickly and cleans up easily. It can be applied to almost anything including canvas, furniture, metal, wood, rocks and other objects. Learn to mix colors and experiment with textures and techniques. Materials needed are: canvas no larger than 16 by 20 inches, acrylic paint set, three acrylic brushes, palette (can be a foam try or plate), rags and water jar.

Both classes are for beginners to semi-pro. Other mediums can be considered, including oil painting wet-on-wet technique, pastels, studio sketching, plein air painting and illustrating children’s books. Tips on matting and framing are included.

Hathaway also offers plein air workshops and art retreats during the summer. Hathaway is a certified watercolor art instructor and an author illustrator.
