1933 – 2014

SUMNER — Dewey A. Vines, 80, of Sumner, died on Friday, Feb. 14, at his home.

He was born in Summerville, Ga., March 30, 1933, the son of Thomas and Normalisa Bagley Smith.

Dewey enlisted in the Navy at a young age and served 20 years as a cook. After retiring from the Navy, he repaired chain saws, owned his own store and worked as a butcher. He maintained the cemeteries in Buckfield and was the Buckfield town constable for many years. Dewey was a member of the VFW, John D. Long American Legion post.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, four-wheeling, guns, gardening and reading westerns, especially those by Louis L’Amour. He loved camping in Lincoln and spent the last 10 summers there.

He was married to Nathalie Knox Heald, she died on Oct. 8, 1989.

Survivors include his sons, Bruce Vines and his wife, Barbara, of Augusta, and Robert Arris and his wife, Janet, of Sumner; a daughter, Brenda Vines-Gough of Oxford; a brother, James of Rome, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
