BATH — A 22-year-old man allegedly smashed a police car with a bat in the Shaw’s parking lot Friday afternoon and was subdued with a Taser before being taken to a local hospital.

Bath police Cpl. Michelle Small went to the shopping center at 1:47 p.m. Friday following a call that a man holding a bat had left the Atlantic Townhouses apartment complex — previously known as Hyde Park — after saying he had nothing to live for and wanted to be arrested, according to a release from Bath Police Chief Michael Field.

Small identified a man fitting the description in the parking lot, and the man allegedly approached her cruiser and struck it with a bat, damaging the right side mirror, Field said.

As Small exited the car, Bath Police Officer Shaun Cavanaugh arrived and both officers told the man several times to drop the bat.

According to Field, the man disregarded the demands and threw the bat at Cavanaugh, prompting Small to use the Taser.

The man was taken to Mid Coast Hospital for evaluation.

While at the hospital, the man allegedly struck Cavanaugh with a fist in the head, according to Field, but did not injure the officer.

Field said the case would be reviewed to see whether charges would be filed.
