WILTON — A Jay man was injured Monday when his snowmobile rear-ended one driven by his grandson on Wilson Lake.

David Jones, 68, of Jay was following his grandson across the lake as they headed toward town, Sgt. Scott Thrasher of the Maine Warden Service said.

The grandson, Dalton Ellis, 17, of Wilton had a mechanical problem and either slowed down or stopped. Jones apparently didn’t see him and rear-ended his snowmobile, flipping it, he said.

Jones was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital by NorthStar ambulance complaining of pain, he said.

Ellis was not hurt, he said.

Both were on the same snowmobile track, Thrasher said. Speed and snow kicked up by the first machine may have been factors in Jones’ inability to see Ellis slowing down, he said.

The accident, reported at 3:45 p.m., is still under investigation.

Ellis was driving a 2004 Arctic Cat and Jones a 2006 Arctic Cat.

Wilton police Sgt. Chad Abbott and members of Wilton Fire Department helped.
