PORTLAND (AP) — A snowy Maine winter has increased the demand for snowblowers, and police in Portland say some opportunistic thieves are taking advantage.
Police said four of the machines have been stolen in the city in the past week.
Lt. James Sweatt said all of the stolen snowblowers were left unsecured and outdoors. They had not been recovered as of Wednesday.
Police think at least two people are involved in the thefts, and are likely using a pickup truck to move the snowblowers, which weigh as much as 100 pounds.
Sweatt told the Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1nPUJnF ) that owners should lock their snowblowers when not in use and store them indoors and out of sight. They also encouraged owners to record their machine’s serial number as well as make and model.
