PORTLAND — Lake Region won its third straight Class B West girls’ basketball title and sixth in nine seasons Saturday, pulling away from Wells in the second half for a 59-51 victory at Cumberland County Civic Center.

Senior center Tiana-Jo Carter scored 24 points, ripped down 18 rebounds and took home the Mike DiRenzo Award as tournament MVP. Sarah Hancock added 11 points and six assists, highlighted by a bank shot 3-pointer at the first-half horn that gave Lake Region (20-1) the lead for good.

The Lakers will travel to Cross Insurance Center in Bangor to face Mount Desert Island on Friday. MDI ended Presque Isle’s 64-game winning streak in the Class B East final.

Lake Region lost its five previous appearances in the state final since 2006, three to Presque Isle and two to Waterville.

Alison Furness amassed 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists in her final game for Wells (18-3), which was the only team to defeat Lake Region during the regular season.

Nicole Moody added 13 points, four assists and four steals.

Wells jumped out to leads of 6-2 and 11-7 in a first half that featured eight lead changes and three ties.
