PARIS — Oxford County Administrator Scott Cole has issued a formal apology to local police chiefs for remarks he made during a county commissioners meeting last week that were quoted in an article published in Monday’s Sun Journal.
During a discussion of possible surveillance improvements at the Oxford County Regional Communications Center, Cole said police officers were spending an inordinate amount of their shift time at the dispatch center on Western Avenue in South Paris and local taxpayers were not getting the full value from their police officers.
In identical letters sent Tuesday to police Chiefs Jon Tibbetts of Oxford, Rob Federico of Norway and Michael Madden of Paris, Cole apologized for the statements.
“These remarks unfairly maligned your department in a public forum of county officials and employees,” Cole said. “They were made in a flip manner and without an objective basis in fact. For this I am sorry.”
In an interview Tuesday afternoon, Cole said he was not misquoted in Monday’s article, but felt his remarks were overreaching and deserved an explanation. He spoke personally with all three chiefs about the issue on Tuesday, he said.
