BUCKFIELD — The Board of Selectmen voted Tuesday night to give residents an opportunity to revisit their vote to withdraw from Regional School Unit 10.

Voters will have an opportunity to rescind their vote taken June 11, 2013, to file a petition for withdrawal from the district. There will be a public hearing May 13.

RSU 10 includes the towns of Buckfield, Hartford, Sumner, Canton, Peru, Dixfield, Carthage, Mexico, Rumford, Byron, Roxbury and Hanover.

The vote to rescind will be on the annual town meeting warrant for June 10, the same day as annual town elections.

Nomination papers for selectman will be available Thursday, March 20, and must be filed no later than April 20. Selectman Warren Wright’s term will be up this year.

The business part of the town meeting will be Saturday, June 14, at the Buckfield Junior-Senior High School Auditorium.

After considerable discussion from the audience, the board voted to hire a part-time town manager from within rather than advertise.

Cindy Dunn is serving as interim town manager. Some questioned Dunn’s ability to juggle those duties with her town clerk responsibilities.

Wright said no one knows Buckfield like Dunn and he was most comfortable with the present setup.

An unidentified person spoke on Dunn’s behalf, saying no one knows the amount of time that Dunn puts into her job.

Wright said if Dunn was paid by the hour, the town would be broke.

Another question arose over Dunn serving as chairman of the Fire-Rescue Station Building Project Committee. Vivian Wadas said she thought the position should belong to a resident who is not a town employee.

The board voted 2-1 to let Dunn stay on. Martha Catevenis voted against.

Earlier in the evening, Dunn met with the Fire Rescue Station committee and looked at drawings of the building presented by Lita Semrau, vice president of Port City Architecture. The committee had several modifications they wanted Port City to consider.

Fire Chief Tim Brooks was concerned about having more storage for fire equipment.

Semrau will bring the modifications at the next meeting on March 12.

Selectmen voted with the Zadoc Long Free Library Committee to hire assistant librarian Elizabeth Santos as librarian. The committee interviewed nine applicants but felt Santos was the most qualified. They will advertise for an assistant librarian.

The board tabled whether to require a bond for the fire-rescue building construction until it has have checked with counsel.
