PORTLAND — A Sabattus man pleaded guilty Wednesday in U.S. District Court to stealing U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs travel benefits.

James Hallowell, 36, claimed travel benefits for more than two dozen 200-mile trips from the town of Littleton, in Aroostook County, to the Togus Veterans Affairs Administration’s medical center for treatment.

In fact, prosecutors said, Hallowell lived close to the veterans hospital and never made those long trips. Investigators said there was no residence at the address in Littleton that Hallowell had listed on his claims.

Hallowell faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. He will be sentenced after completion of a presentencing investigation report by the U.S. Probation Office.

The investigation was conducted by the VA, Office of the Inspector General.
