Coach Edwards (Portland Pirates) is right. I was at the game Feb. 25 and there was no energy in the building, off or on the ice. I think most people realized even before the announcement in the Sun Journal about the Pirates returning to Portland that that would be the case.

I have watched hockey in Lewiston for more than 40 years. While watching youth hockey, high school hockey, L-A Twins, Maine Nordiques and the Maineiacs, I’ve seen the most energetic, exciting, enthusiastic, crazy and supportive hockey fans of any hockey arena in the state.

I think what has been missing from the beginning is a commitment. It is tough to play somewhere you really don’t want to be, and it is tough to watch.

That being said, I wish the Portland Pirates all the best in their return to the Cumberland County Civic Center for their future hockey seasons.
