MONMOUTH — The passenger in one of two cars involved in an accident on Route 202 Thursday morning died at the scene, police said.

Joan Fortier, 67, of Mount Vernon was in a car driven by Gene Potter, 70, of Mount Vernon. Potter’s 2006 Hyundai Eleantra was headed west when it collided with a 1999 Mercury Mountaineer SUV driven east by Alyssa Marcellino, 22, of Winthrop.

The accident occurred at about 7:30 a.m. near Halls Collision Center in North Monmouth.

Potter and Marcellino were taken by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with non-life-threatening injuries, police Chief Kevin Mulherin wrote in a statement.

The accident remained under investigation by local and state police.
