1918 – 2014

LEWISTON — Alvar R. Jarvi Sr., 95, passed away on Tuesday, March 4, at St. Mary’s d’Youville Pavilion, where he had been a resident since April 2013. He enjoyed reminiscing about his days on the railroad with other residents at d’Youville, where he will be fondly remembered as a quiet man, with a good sense of humor. He lived in West Minot since he was 8 years old.

Alvar was born in Woburn, Mass., on June 21, 1918, the son of Richard and Hilma Savela Jarvi. He worked for Maine Central Railroad, retiring after 38 years in July 1979. His hobbies included dancing and gardening.

He leaves one son, Alvar R. Jarvi Jr. and his wife, Leah; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Agnes; his daughter, Joan; and his longtime companion, Ada Gilman.

The family appreciates the excellent care he received at d’Youville Pavilion and Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice.
