Coming storm causes postponement of La Rencontre – again

LEWISTON — For the second straight month, a big winter storm is set to coincide with the scheduled date for the Franco Center’s monthly French luncheon, known as La Rencontre. And for the second straight month, officials at the Franco Center have deferred to Mother Nature and postponed the event by one day. The luncheon is now set for 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 14.

The French Circus and the students of the all-French elementary school in Freeport, L’École Française du Maine, will provide entertainment after the meal. The circus is run by a husband-and-wife team from France for whom a one-day postponement is not a problem, but who could not remain in Maine for an additional week.

The date change also necessitates a slight change in the menu. Catholics who observe Lent make a vow to avoid meat on Fridays, and so the meal to be served at La Rencontre will be a meatless lasagne with cheese only. The rest of the menu will remain unchanged.

The Franco Center asks that everyone who has registered to call 207-783-1585 during business hours by 4 p.m. Wednesday as to whether they still plan to attend now that the date has been pushed back to Friday.
