PORTLAND (AP) — The mayor of the Maine city of Portland is discussing setting a citywide wage.
Mayor Michael Brennan said he will hold the first of several meetings on Thursday to examine the city having its own minimum wage. He first raised the idea during his state of the city address in January.
The meeting is scheduled to take place in the Portland City Hall, beginning at 4 p.m.
The mayor said in his earlier address to the city that he hoped to equalize income and reduce unemployment through the proposed measure. Only a handful of cities in the U.S. have set minimum wages above the federal or individual state levels.
Maine’s minimum wage is $7.50, 25 cents above the federal minimum wage.
