PORTLAND — The Choral Art Society of Portland has released information about its New England Carol Contest. To celebrate the time-honored holiday tradition of carol singing, CAS is encouraging composers with a New England connection to submit original compositions. The Choral Art Society will premiere the winning carol during its holiday season of concerts.

To be eligible, composers must have been born in or currently reside in one of the six New England states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont), or be a composer studying in residence at a New England college, university, or conservatory.

“Over the past two decades, The Choral Art Society has supported new music through several commissioned works and a number of Maine premiere performances of choral music,” said Robert Russell, CAS music director. “As we continue to expand our commitment to new music, the Carol Contest is the perfect opportunity for us to encourage composers to produce new pieces.”

Compositions must be submitted by 6 p.m. Sunday, June 1, 2014. The winning composer will receive a $500 cash prize and up to $250 in travel expenses to attend the Portland premiere. Contest guidelines may be found on the CAS website at www.choralart.org/carolcontest.
