1931 – 2014

WEST PARIS — Elouise Agnes Dunham Howe of Bryant Pond died Monday, March 24, at Ledgeview Living Center in West Paris.

She was born in Locke Mills on Nov. 27, 1931, the daughter of R. Clyde and Rowena A. Ring Dunham. She grew up in Locke Mills, graduating from Woodstock High School at the top of her class in 1950. She enjoyed playing basketball and softball during those years.

She was happily married to Edwin Howe of Bryant Pond since Nov. 1, 1950. She worked for several years at Stowell Silk Spool Co. Later, she worked for 21 years as a certified nurse’s aide at Ledgeview Living Center, retiring in 1993.

She was a member of the Universalist Church of Bryant Pond, the Franklin Grange (a 50 year-member), the Woodstock Historical Society and the Woodstock-Greenwood Senior Citizens group.

Elouise enjoyed her family and seeing her three grandchildren grow up nearby, especially watching their many sports activities over the years. After retirement, she and her husband enjoyed taking 10 trips to Alaska to visit their daughter and son-in-law.

She enjoyed her pet cat, taking walks through the woods behind their house, berry picking and tending her flower gardens. Other activities included brook fishing, trolling for white perch and fishing for salmon and halibut in Alaska. Her competitive spirit delighted her family in many games of Scrabble, Chinese checkers, volleyball, croquet and badminton.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Edwin; her son, Wayne and his wife, Marilyn, of Bryant Pond; her daughter, Irene Cerra and husband, Jerry, of Sequim, Wash.; three grandchildren, Christopher Howe and his fiancée, Tonia Gilley-Pratt, of Waterville, Bethany Emerson and husband, Dr. Fred Emerson, of Gorham and Jared Howe of Bethel; and two great-grandchildren, Laurel and Grant Emerson. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Olive Risko of Bryant Pond and Rowena Dunham of West Paris; two brothers-in-law, Bill and Winona Howe of Bryant Pond and C. Stephen and Joyce Howe of Bryant Pond; and 14 beloved nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Leland and Herbert Dunham.
