AUBURN — G&G Landscaping forward Sheldon Roy threaded a pass in front of Lewiston Police Department goaltender James Thiess to Eric Potvin who scored the winning goal 20 seconds into the first overtime, giving G&G Landscape a 3-2 victory and its first Lewiston Auburn Senior Hockey League Championship title at Norway Savings Bank Arena last Friday.

In the two previous regular season matchups between the teams, the Lewiston Police Department had made easy work of the G&G team, outscoring it by a combined score of 16-1.

A determined G&G team opened the scoring 15 seconds into the game when Sheldon Roy finished a feed from Eric Potvin, beating Thiess and sending a message that ninth-seeded G&G was no walkover on this night. In a game that featured tight checking and physical and defensive battles at both ends of the ice, the highly skilled LPD team fought back with two goals of its own to head into the final period with a 2-1 lead.

Down 2-1 and down a man on the penalty kill with 3:34 seconds left in the third period, G&G’s Roy split the defense on a beautiful neutral zone feed from Jimmy Costa and sniped a top-corner goal to tie up the game and send it into overtime.

Roy finished the game with two goals and an assist, while linemate Potvin netted the game-winner along with a helper of his own.

The G&G Landscaping club (12-12-1) capped its season and completed a shocking playoff run with four consecutive upset victories, and in true Cinderella fashion, knocking off the third-seeded LPD team (17-8-0) after previously defeating No. 8 Taylor Brook Dental, No. 1 Gould Builders and fourth-seeded Gritty’s in earlier playoff matchups.

G&G goaltender Jimmy Avery was stellar throughout the playoff run and even better in the championship final. He was named team MVP by his teammates. Avery plans to hang the championship plaque above his locker at the Lewiston Police Department for his coworkers to admire.
