RUMFORD — Winter snows have been deep, but the number of snow days taken at SAD 44 and RSU 10 are for the most part within what was expected.

RSU 10 Superintendent Craig King said six days had been taken by the end of March, which he said was about average for Western Maine, which often receives more snow than some other parts of the state.

This means all elementary and undergraduate students will attend classes through June 16. If additional days must be taken in April, then the last day of school will be later.

Graduations for the three high schools will remain as originally scheduled: June 5 for Mountain Valley High School, June 6 for Dirigo High School and June 7 for Buckfield Junior-Senior High School.

In SAD 44, Superintendent David Murphy said six days have already been taken, which is one day more than those that had been built into the school calendar, bringing the last day of school to June 18. If additional snow days are called, the last day will be later.

Telstar High School graduation remains at June 6.

This year’s extreme winter weather, including a couple of ice storms, has caused significant damage at Mountain Valley High School to the aging roof and prompted the relocation of many events and classes.

King said the board will decide, once an engineering study is completed, whether to conduct a short-term fix, or have the entire roof replaced.

In SAD 44, Murphy said the roof at Woodstock Elementary School has sprung many leaks, but not enough to relocate classrooms. He said the soon-to-be adopted 2014-15 budget includes replacement of a significant portion of the roof.

“We haven’t had to move anyone,” he said. “We’ve been in pretty good shape.”

A few minor leaks have plagued the roofs at the Telstar High School/Middle School complex and Crescent Park Elementary School, but not enough to cause problems.
