LISBON — A Houston Street homeowner has been charged with setting his house on fire Sunday morning.

Michael D. Hersom, 41, of Lisbon was charged with arson after his home was heavily damaged by fire Sunday morning, according to a news release from Steve McCausland, spokesman for the State Fire Marshal’s office.

According to the release, Hersom was recently released from jail on an unrelated charge and got into an argument with his wife, Sherry Hersom, on Sunday.

Sherry Hersom then left the house, taking many of her belongings with her, and police believe Michael Hersom then set fire to the remaining belongings in the bedroom just after 8 a.m. The fire quickly spread through the house, according to McCausland.

Hersom was arrested Sunday afternoon and taken to Androscoggin County Jail, where he is being held on $10,000 bail, probation violations and has been ordered to have no contact with Sherry Hersom.

Damage to the Hersom home was estimated about about $100,000, including heavy smoke damage throughout the building.
