1971 – 2014

BOSTON, Mass. — Vera Marie Heuer, 43, of Bowdoin, passed away Wednesday, April 2, at Massachusetts General Hospital, after losing her battle with cystic fibrosis.

She was born in Bristol, Conn., on Feb. 28, 1971, the daughter of Norman and Paula Small Letendre. Vera attended schools in Bowdoin and Lisbon Falls, and graduated from Lisbon High School. On April 21, 1993, Vera married Anthony Heuer. They have a daughter, Naomi Heuer, who was the center of Vera’s world.

Vera was the state poster child for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in Connecticut in 1976. She was a volunteer at Bowdoin Central School in the computer lab and was a Girl Scout leader for 12 years. Vera enjoyed working with the Girl Scouts — she considered all the scouts her girls. Even with her disabilities, she took the girls camping and on trips and taught them many things. Vera was always busy with her hands doing crafts or crocheting, famous for her plastic tote bags. She was a fighter, never giving in to her disability.

She is survived by her loving husband, Anthony “Tony” Heuer; her wonderful daughter, Naomi Heuer; her mother, Paula Small Letendre, of Bowdoin; and her father, Norman Letendre, of Sandy Hook, Conn. Vera is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and all the girls in her Girl Scout family.

She was predeceased by her sister, Beth Letendre; her uncle, Stephen Small; and her grandparents, Joseph Albert and Marie-Ange Letendre and Roland and Patricia Small.
