AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine environmental regulators are asking the state’s largest wind power developer to prove it has enough money to build four major projects that are in different stages of construction and permitting.

The Department of Environmental Protection’s request follows a Maine Supreme Judicial Court ruling last month that the state’s Public Utilities Commission erred when it approved a joint venture between First Wind and Emera Inc.

The projects the DEP is scrutinizing had millions of dollars in financing from Emera, money First Wind now can’t use.

The DEP’s request affects projects in Aroostook, Hancock and Somerset counties and one in Penobscot and Washington counties.

A First Wind spokesman told The Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/OCbec4 ) the company has “an outstanding track record of raising funds” and Emera wasn’t the only source of financing.
