CAPE ELIZABETH (AP) — Visitors to Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth will soon face fines if they smoke or use tobacco products on park grounds.

The Town Council voted 6-1 Monday night to ban smoking and tobacco products from the popular seaside park, home to Portland Head Light.

The ordinance takes effect in 30 days. Anyone caught using tobacco products or even e-cigarettes at the popular tourist destination faces a $250 fine. Town Manager Michael McGovern says fines will only be assessed if visitors refuse park staff’s request to extinguish smoking materials.

Councilor David Sherman supported the ban, citing the disrespect smokers show by flicking their butts everywhere.

More than 70 other Maine communities ban smoking in public places, but Cape Elizabeth’s ordinance is different because of the ban on e-cigarettes.
