NORWAY — An Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School student has dedicated his senior project to raising money to help the family of a teenager who died in a hit-and-run accident in March.

Paul Fanjoy of Norway said he wanted to help the family of Xavier Fuentes, 16, of Turner pay for funeral expenses and other needs. He has chosen to make a turkey casserole and the fixings for as many as 250 people Saturday at the Norway Fire Station.

Fuentes, a Leavitt Area High School student, died March 15 after he was struck by a vehicle while walking on an unlit stretch of Route 117 in Paris. Police have not found the driver.

The supper begins at 5 p.m. at the station at 19 Danforth St.

“It was originally going to be a fundraiser for the Fire Department to buy equipment. Now it’s become much more,” Fanjoy said. He said Fire Department personnel asked him to make it a fundraiser for Fuentes’ family.

“I thought it was a great idea,” he said.

Though Fanjoy never knew Fuentes, he said he met him once while Fuentes was at the the Paris high school for programming, and he has since met Fuentes’ stepfather, Ron Cole, an officer with the Norway Police Department.

Using money he earned from a bottle fundraiser and some of his own money, Fanjoy purchased nine, 14-pound turkeys. He began roasting them after returning home at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday from his job at KFC in Paris.

The turkeys will be made into casseroles for the supper. Potatoes and other fixings will be made at the fire station’s kitchen Saturday.

“He’s been raised to do something nice for someone else every day,” said his mother, Carol Fanjoy, who works at the Paris Elementary School.

Paul plans to work a year to earn money to attend Central Maine Community College in Auburn in the fall 2015, he said.
