WATERVILLE —  For the 11th time in the past 12 years, the Bates College men’s track and field team won the Maine State Outdoor Championship on Saturday at Colby, winning seven events along the way.

With points earned for top-six performances in each event, Bates scored 212 points, outscoring runner-up Bowdoin (166), followed by Colby (113), Southern Maine (104) and St. Joseph’s (18).

Bates sophomore Rudy Pandora of Lewiston claimed the state title in both the shot put, with a top effort of 46-1.25, and the discus throw, at 141-2.

Senior Jarret McKallagat (Atkinson, N.H.) won the 110-meter hurdles by a 0.17-second margin, at 14.85 seconds, slicing 0.08 seconds off of his personal best. McKallagat’s time was only 0.04 shy of the team record held by Adam Macbeth. McKallagat then took second place in the 400 hurdles, in 56.33 seconds.

First-year Colin Kraft (Northborough, Mass.) won the 200-meter dash title in a time of 22.47 seconds, and also placed second in the 100-meter dash (10.93 seconds). Kraft moved into fifth place on Bates’ all-time performance list in the 100.

Junior Sean Enos (Lynnfield, Mass.), the NESCAC and ECAC New England Division III Field Performer of the Week, won the hammer throw with a top distance of 159-11. Enos also placed fourth in both the shot put (40-6.25) and the discus (125-0).

Senior John Wisener (Ridgewood, N.J.) won the pole vault by clearing 14-1.25.

Senior Ben Levy (Belmont, Mass.) won the 400-meter dash in 51.70 seconds.

Baseball

Bates, Trinity break even

HARTFORD, Conn. – Bates College baseball won game one in extra innings, 12-7, while Trinity College took game two in extra frames, 2-1, in a NESCAC East Division doubleheader at Campus Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats (13-11, 4-3 NESCAC East) struck for six runs in the top of the eighth and final inning in game one while the Bantams (10-16, 4-8 NESCAC East) walked off with a Scott Huley single in the bottom of the ninth in game two.

Bates took the series, 2-1, after besting Trinity, 9-2, on Friday afternoon. The Bobcats now sit in sole possession of second place in the NESCAC East Division – two games up in the loss column on both Bowdoin and Colby.

Next, Bates plays at Endicott on Monday at 3 p.m.

First-year Brendan Fox (West Hartford, Conn.) went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, senior Griff Tewksbury (Concord, N.H.) hit his fifth home run of the season, and Bates topped Trinity 12-7 in eight innings in game one.

Junior Mekae Hyde (Lewiston) recorded three hits and three runs scored while classmates Rockwell Jackson (Fort Worth, Texas) and Nate Pajka (Douglas, Mass.), senior Steve Burke (Bedford, N.H.), and sophomore Conor Reenstierna (Lincoln, Mass.) each notched two hits as the Bobcats tallied 17 total hits.

Senior left-hander Chris Fusco (Annapolis, Md.) pitched five innings in the start, allowing three runs on six hits while sophomore reliever Rob DiFranco (Melrose, Mass.) picked up the win (3-1).

Maine, Binghamton split

VESTAL, N.Y. —  The University of Maine baseball team split a doubleheader at Binghamton on Saturday afternoon. Alex Calbick and Tommy Lawrence led the Black Bears to a 3-0 victory in game one. Maine dropped the second game 7-1.

The Black Bears moved to 14-20 on the season and 5-6 in America East play. Binghamton saw its record go to 11-19 overall, 5-8 in conference play.

The first game was a defensive battle the majority of the game. The two teams went to the top of the eighth inning scoreless. Brian Doran threw Binghamton’s Bill Bereszniewic out at home plate in the bottom of the sixth inning to keep the game scoreless.

Maine struck first when senior Calbick led off the eighth inning with a home run over the right field fence. It was the second home run of the season for Calbick, who finished the game 3-for-4. Doran drew a walk and Nick Bernardo followed with a single to left field later. Jonathan Salcedo drove home Doran with a RBI single, giving Maine the 2-0 lead.

The Black Bears added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning. Troy Black reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second base and scored when Scott Heath singled to center field.

Maine ace Lawrence was impressive in the victory, scattering just six hits over nine innings without allowing a run. He struck out seven batters in the complete game shutout and improved to 4-4 on the season.

In the second game, the Black Bears tied it in the bottom of the third inning when Black belted a home run over the right field fence. For Black. But the Bearcats added three runs in the bottom of the third inning and three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

One up, one down for USM

GORHAM — The University of Southern Maine Huskies and Plymouth State University Panthers split their Little East Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the USM Baseball Stadium.

The Huskies took the first game 6-2 behind a strong pitching performance by sophomore left-hander Tyler Leavitt (North Andover, Mass.). The Panthers took the nightcap 7-1 as junior right-hander Cody Gilchrist (Tyngsboro, Mass./Bishop Guertin) limited the Huskies to five hits over eight innings. The split stopped the #6/#7 Huskies’ nine-game winning streak and leaves them at 23-7 overall and 8-1 in conference play.

The Panthers earned their second LEC win in the last two days after beating in-state rival Keene State College on Friday, and they are now 15-13 overall and 3-6 in the conference.

Tufts takes two from Colby

MEDFORD, Mass. — A pair of walk-off wins on Saturday gave the No. 15 Tufts baseball team double-header and weekend series sweeps over Colby at Huskins Field. Tufts won 3-2 in the 10th inning of game one and took a 1-0 victory in the bottom of the seventh in game two.

Sophomore Matt Moser had the game-winning hit, was the winning pitcher and also homered in game one. Senior co-captain Christian Sbily three a seven-inning, three-hit shutout for the Jumbos in the nightcap.

Tufts is now 23-2 overall and 6-1 in the NESCAC East Division. Colby, which got a stand-out pitching performance from junior Greg Ladd in game two, drops to 13-9 and 4-5 in the NESCAC East.

Bowdoin, Williams split

BRUNSWICK —  The Bowdoin and Williams baseball teams split a doubleheader at Pickard Field on Saturday, with the Polar Bears taking game one, 4-2, and the Ephs winning game two in 10 innings, 7-6.

Bowdoin stands at 14-11-1, while Williams is 8-11.

Erik Jacobsen tossed six excellent innings and Aaron Rosen went 4-4 to propel Bowdoin to victory in the opener. Jacobsen allowed two earned runs over six frames, striking out five, before giving way to Jon Fraser, who pitched the seventh for the save.

After a tightly-played, well-pitched opener, the teams combined for 13 runs, 21 hits and five errors in the nightcap.

Softball

Maine drops two at Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. —  The University of Maine softball team (15-15, 6-7 America East) dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Stony Brook (24-14, 12-1 AE) on Saturday afternoon, losing game one 1-0 before falling in game two by a score of 3-1.

Jean Stevens provided the lone offense for the Black Bears with a solo home run in game two. Samantha Ralphs paced Maine’s offense in game one with a pair of singles. Jessica Burk tallied a hit in each game to run her current hitting streak to eight games.

Bowdoin sweeps Brandeis

BRUNSWICK —  The Bowdoin softball team put together a pair of 5-1 wins to sweep a Saturday doubleheader against Brandeis University.

The Polar Bears improved to 18-10, while the Judges dropped to 15-15.

Nicole Nelson paced Bowdoin’s offense, going 5-for-6 on the day with five RBI and a pair of doubles. Emily Griffin pitched all seven innings on the opening game, collecting three strikeouts with just one walk and a single earned run. Melissa DellaTorre was similarly successful in the nightcap, allowing just one run with eight strikeouts.

Men’s lacrosse

Conn. College 11, Bates 8

LEWISTON —  Connecticut College outscored the Bates College men’s lacrosse team 8-0 over a stretch of more than 28 minutes, erasing an early 3-1 Bates lead en route to an 11-8 NESCAC victory Saturday afternoon at Garcelon Field.

Bates (4-8, 1-8 NESCAC) fell out of postseason contention with the loss and will finish the 2014 season at rival Colby on Wednesday at 4pm.

CC (9-5, 5-4 NESCAC) moved into a tie with Williams for sixth place in the conference, and will finish the regular season at Wesleyan on Wednesday at 4:30pm.

Tyler Hegarty scored four goals to lead the Camels. Briggs Barton scored three times and added an assist, while Derek Bertolini handed out three assists in addition to two goals. JR Hartgers contributed a goal and two more assists. Goalkeeper Bobby Bleistein may have been the Camels’ top performer of the day, making 15 saves and collecting three ground balls. Faceoff man John Hazard would also lay a valid claim to that title, after winning 13 of 20 faceoffs and scooping 11 ground balls.

Bates took one more shot than CC, 34-33, and put five more shots on goal than the Camels, 23-18.

Jack Allard led Bates with three goals and two assists, while Will Gilkeson added a season-high two scores with one assist.

Women’s lacrosse

UMF 8, Colby-Sawyer 7

KENTS HILL —  University of Maine at Farmington sophomore Ayla Allen’s goal with 4:26 left in the game lifted the Beavers to an 8-7 ‘Senior Day’ win over Colby-Sawyer College, in a North Atlantic Conference women’s lacrosse match Saturday at the Kents Hill School’s Ted Alfond Field.

UMaine-Farmington improved to 5-8 overall with the victory, 3-3 in the NAC, and puts the Beavers on course to host a NAC Tournament quarterfinal match for the second straight season. The Beavers will learn their initial post-season opponent when tournament pairings are announced at the conclusion of league play early next week.

Castleton 16, Husson 4

CASTLETON, Vt. —- Husson women’s lacrosse fell 16-4 to Castleton in its final regular season game Saturday.

Maddy DaCosta scored three goals and tallied an assist while Kate Auer registered two goals and two assists to lead the Spartans. The Castleton offensive was a well-spread effort as 11 different Spartans found the net.

Mariah Carrier led the Husson offense, coming off the bench to score twice. She also scooped three ground balls and earned a draw control.
