LEWISTON — La Rencontre will meet at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 8, at the Franco Center, 46 Cedar St.

The center will be serving fresh lobster rolls on a hamburger bun with pickles, potato chips and a chocolate chip cookie. The cost of the meal is $8 per person.

After the meal, Dr. Michael Ricci, Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute vascular surgeon, will give a presentation about the benefits of screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm followed with entertainment by Nel Meservier and Friends.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has issued recommendations for abdominal aortic aneurysm screening as the medical evidence suggests that one-time screening for abdominal aortic aneurysms could benefit older men. Risk factors for AAA include advanced age, male sex, smoking and a family history, with smoking being the most important modifiable risk factor. USPSTF found convincing evidence that screening men aged 65 and older decreased AAA-related mortality rates by approximately 50 percent over 13 to 15 years.

The program presented by Nel Meservier and Friends will include songs in English and French with titles such as “Da Doo Ron Ron,” “Les Bicyclettes de Belsize,” “Souvenirs” and “Et Maintenant.” In addition, the vocalists will sing traditional French songs to include “Les Vilons d’Acadie” and “La Vie en Rose.”

Doors open at 10 a.m. La Rencontre is not restricted to French-speakers or even those of Franco descent. All are welcome.
