1917 – 2014

AUBURN — Elaine (Pomerleau) Groves, 96, a resident of Clover Manor in Auburn and formerly of 656 College St., Lewiston, passed away Friday, May 2, at the Hospice House following a brief illness.

Elaine was born in Saint-Honore, Canada, on Nov. 28, 1917, a daughter of the late Alfred and Marie (Fortier) Pomerleau. She was educated in the Jay school system.

On July 2, 1938, she married her loving husband, Leo S. Groves Sr., who passed away on Oct. 27, 1994. Together, Elaine and Leo lived and raised their family in Lewiston.

In her early years, Elaine and Leo hosted many family gatherings at their summer camps at Thompson Lake and Middle Range Pond. Elaine loved to knit, sew and crochet. She also loved playing Yahtzee and Rummy, especially with her grandchildren. She was very active in the Lewiston/Auburn senior community and traveled to many beano games. Elaine was a member of St. Joseph’s parish and the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. 

Survivors include three daughters, Doris Conley of Cape Coral, Fla., Nancy Reed and husband, Raymond, of Aiken, S.C., and Donna Forgues and husband, Daniel, of Auburn; one son, Leo S. Groves Jr. of Mechanic Falls; one brother, Lucien Pomerleau of Wallingford, Conn.; two sisters, Claire Richard of Harpswell, and Jacqueline Bartley of Ventura, Calif.; grandchildren, Angela and Allison Forgues, Robert and Matthew Reed, Frank, Dina and Patricia Conley, Erin Elsdon, Hillary, Brittany and Leo Groves, III; nine great-grandchildren; 12 nieces; and five nephews.

Elaine was predeceased by her husband, Leo; three brothers, Leo, Cyrille and Andrew Pomerleau; three sisters, Madeline Pomerleau, Fabiola Thibeault and Aurore Kalnowski; and a granddaughter, Rebecca Reed.
