FARMINGTON — Peter Hardy will sign copies of his new book, “Thorn: the Tree,” at 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, at the Homestead Bakery Bar and Kitchen on Broadway.

Hardy, an associate professor of mathematics at the University of Maine at Farmington, will also discuss his book, which is a parable of ecology and man’s spiritual connection to nature.

Hardy will also provide live music, Kenny Brechner of Devaney Doak and Garrett Booksellers said. The bookstore is hosting the event.

The book comes with a CD of music pertaining to the story, he said. It will be available at the Broadway bookstore following Wednesday’s launch.

“Thorn is a 100-year-old oak tree with a consciousness,” Hardy said. “He is discovered atop a mountain in Maine by a lumberjack and his mathematician friend. They begin a two-week long conversation with Thorn through mental telepathy. They help each other unravel their past incarnations and witness a future Earth devastated by war and natural disaster, which Thorn warns could be close at hand.”

Along with teaching math at UMF, Hardy puts poetry to music and creates a sustainable lifestyle with his family on Rainbow Farm.
