NEWFIELD (AP) — Police say a driver reaching for his cellphone appears to be the cause of a two-vehicle crash in Newfield that sent a local woman to a Portland hospital.

Police say 20-year-old Emily Mee was driving her car north at about 4 p.m. Tuesday when a pickup truck headed in the opposite direction crossed into her lane and the vehicles struck head-on.

Mee was trapped in her car for about 20 minutes and once freed was flown by helicopter to Maine Medical Center.

The York County Sheriff’s Office said the driver of the pickup, a 53-year-old Waterboro man, told officers he bent over to pick up his cellphone just before the crash.

The crash remains under investigation but police anticipate charging the Waterboro man.
