AUGUSTA (AP) — A Wiscasset man has been sentenced to two years in prison for accidentally shooting his girlfriend.

Sean Kingston was sentenced after pleading guilty in Kennebec County Superior Court to charges of reckless conduct and possession of a gun by a prohibited person.

Police responding to the woman’s Gardiner home in December found her suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso.

The spent round was recovered between the mattress and the mattress cover.

Police initially were told the couple found the gun and were looking at it when it went off. Later, the 38-year-old Kingston told police it was his handgun and it fired accidentally. The woman agreed it was an accident.

Because Kingston was convicted of a felony in 1997 he is prohibited from having a firearm.
