CANTON — The Canton Parks and Trails Committee will hold its sixth annual plant sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 23 and 24, at the Canton Heritage Park.

Committee member Jolene Adley said the committee shifted the sale days from Saturday and Sunday to attract more residents.

“We thought that if we started the plant sale at the start of the weekend, we may be able to get a few more people to look around,” she said. “Normally, we average between $900 and $1,000 from the sale. We’ll see what starting on Friday brings.”

The committee has had a variety of items in the past, including seedlings and houseplants. This year, however, there will only be perennials.

“We’ve found that the seedlings and houseplants didn’t sell as well as we thought, so we’re sticking to what we know people like most,” Adley said.

The money raised will go toward maintaining Canton Heritage Park across from the Victorian Villa Rehabilitation and Living Center and the park’s half-mile walking trail.

“The town funds us every year, and we use that money to buy different tools and materials,” Adley said. “For instance, we’ve been able to buy a whole bunch of tools, as well as a shed to keep those tools in, but the extra money we get from the plant sale helps with the overall maintenance of the park.”

Any plants that aren’t sold will be given to the River Valley Animal Advocates.

“We have a member of the Canton Parks and Trails Committee who is also a member of the River Valley Animal Advocates,” Adley said. “The Animal Advocates always hold their own plant sale a couple weeks after the Parks and Trails Committee holds theirs. If we have any left over, we just give them to the Animal Advocates.”
