NEWRY — Selectmen decided Tuesday night to place paving work for Skiway and Monkey Brook roads out to bid.

Skiway Road is to be paved from Sunday River Road to the end of Skiway Road, a distance of 6,000 feet.

Monkey Brook Road is to be paved from its end to its intersection with Sunday River Road, a distance of 3,800 feet.

In other business, Selectman Brooks Morton gave Administrator Loretta Powers and selectmen Chairwoman Wendy Hanscom a town administrator’s job description from Holbrook, Mass., to determine if it would work for Newry.

At previous board meetings, Morton pushed for a new description for the administrator’s job.

Powers also notified selectmen that Hurricane Island Outward Bound will present a project to the Planning Board on Wednesday night to build four small bunkhouses.

Three people took out papers to run for two Board of Selectmen seats in the June 10 municipal election. They are Hanscom and Selectman Gary Wight, and Planning Board member Doug Webster.

Hanscom and Wight had to resign earlier this month because Newry changed its method of voting by adopting the secret ballot method in August 2012. The town didn’t use that method when electing Hanscom and Wight and SAD 44 board members Bonnie Largess and Deb Webster.

To prevent any potential issues, the town attorney advised the board March 18 that all four who were elected in 2013 and 2014 should resign.

Largess and Webster resigned due to the error in the election process, and selectmen reappointed them to finish out their terms until March 2015.

But a special, shortened nomination process and election had to be held for Hanscom’s three-year term from March 2014 and Wight’s remaining two years from his election in March 2013.

Absentee ballots for the June 10 election are available at the Town Office. In addition to the special selectmen meeting and primary elections, residents will also vote on the SAD 44 budget. Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Town Office.
